187 Customs- Murder Nova Titanium Zoomie Headers!

We got the opportunity to work with Shawn and Danny 'Phantom' at 187 Customs to create new extreme light-weight zoomie headers for their flagship race car: Murder Nova. Using their existing stainless headers as a custom build template, we replicated the system in lightweight titanium. We started with creating a quick-turn build fixture on our jig table, adding clamps, supports, and bracketry to all the pertinent locations (bend tangents, bung positions, bracket mounts, etc..) and then verifying the turn up slope on the zoomie tips. From there, we carefully measured and digitized the flange profile to ensure we could duplicate the port and bolt locations exactly. Once digitized, we machined the very first set of billet titanium header flanges from .400" thick CP1 titanium for a Noonan Mach1 Billet cylinder head. These were carefully blended and ported to match the existing port profile of the old headers. Once the flanges were complete, we began the custom bending process. After careful routing and notation of design needs, we were able to elimiante welds in every header tube with a custom bending process, creating compound bend profiles in the thin wall CP2 titanium tubing. By eliminating 10 weld seams across the entire header system, we were able to improve overall strength and composition of the headers, as well as improve life expectancy with this metal. For all of the accessory components (brackets, EGt bungs, o2 sniffer kit) we added additional gusset & doubler plates to improve strength and longevity of those weld joints. This will also improve and help mitigate any weld joint failure that can happen in thin wall titanium tubing when exposed to high heat and vibrations. To further strengthen the system, we added long gusset plates underneath connecting the header tubes to the billet titanium header flanges, relieving stress on the flange weld joints. After all that, it was down to final assembly! Note the floating sleeves near the final bend on the headers, allowing the strut support rod bracket to 'float' along the header tubes, allowing for some movement in the system to assist in vibration absorption and improving overall header life expectancy.
